During the May 7, 2026 White House meeting, Lula highlighted that the 2010 agreement was superior to later initiatives and advocated diplomatic solutions for tensions with Iran. He noted the deal provided for the transfer of 1.2 tons of low-enriched uranium to Turkey under international supervision.
On trade, Lula proposed a bilateral working group to examine tariffs and the U.S. Section 301 investigation covering Pix and ethanol. The Brazilian president rebutted imbalance claims by citing an average 2.7% tax on American products.
The leaders also discussed organized crime without addressing the terrorist designation of factions like the PCC and CV. Lula suggested an international group to fight trafficking and stressed economic alternatives for drug-producing countries in Latin America.
Lula joked with Trump about visas for Brazilian national team players at the 2026 World Cup, and the American praised the encounter as very good.
