Mavericks affirm commitment to Kyrie Irving amid trade rumors

The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly not open to trading Kyrie Irving, despite interest from other teams. Irving, recovering from an ACL tear, remains a key part of the franchise's future alongside young prospect Cooper Flagg. The team values his leadership as they navigate a challenging 4-12 start to the season.

Trade speculation surrounding Kyrie Irving has intensified, but the Dallas Mavericks have made it clear they intend to keep the nine-time All-Star. According to Shams Charania on "NBA Today," teams are inquiring about Irving's availability and playing status, yet the Mavericks have privately emphasized their desire for him to be "a complete part of their future moving forward." This stance contrasts with rumors involving Anthony Davis, whom the team is reportedly listening to trade offers for, though minority owner Mark Cuban has denied those intentions.

Irving, who will turn 34 in March, suffered an ACL tear in March and is currently in rehabilitation. He signed a three-year contract in the offseason, with salaries of $36.6 million this season, $39.5 million next season, and a $42.4 million player option for 2027-28. Despite his absence, the Mavericks see Irving's fit with 18-year-old prospect Cooper Flagg as crucial. Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that Dallas is "not encouraging trade inquiries" for Irving, noting he is already "vibing nicely" with Flagg in practice.

The Mavericks currently hold a 4-12 record and rank as the NBA's worst offensive team, struggling in close games without Irving's playmaking. Post the 2026 Draft, the team lacks control of its own picks until 2031, prompting discussions on whether to trade veterans for assets to build around Flagg. However, with interim executives Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley handling duties after Nico Harrison's departure, and Cuban involved, the focus remains on winning now. Davis, meanwhile, is sidelined with a calf injury.

This commitment to Irving highlights the Mavericks' balancing act between immediate contention and long-term rebuilding.
