Meta rolls out firmware update for smart glasses privacy

Meta has introduced a mandatory firmware update for its Ray-Ban smart glasses to address tampering with the recording indicator light. The change aims to stop users from disabling the LED that signals when the camera is active.

The update follows services that offered modifications to deactivate the light, enabling more discreet recording. Meta stated the firmware will deactivate the camera if any tampering is detected.

Other privacy concerns persist. The LED remains difficult to notice in daylight, and the glasses resemble ordinary eyewear. Bans on the devices have already appeared in New York courtrooms and on some cruise ships.

Meta executive Andrew Bosworth has expressed interest in future camera-free designs. The company is also developing longer-recording capabilities and facial recognition features for upcoming models.
