Johanna Rolland, Nantes's socialist mayor, has forged an alliance with the Greens to lead a united left list from the first round of the 2026 municipal elections. This pact, approved by 81.2% of local Green militants, clears the path for her third term. It features expansions like free public transport for the most vulnerable.
On October 15, 2025, Johanna Rolland, Nantes's mayor from the Socialist Party (PS) and president of Nantes Métropole, formalized a united list with the Greens for the March 2026 municipal elections. Seeking a third term, she will lead this left-wing alliance from the first round, unlike in 2020 when the lists merged between rounds.
The vote among local Green militants, held the previous Tuesday, was a landslide: 81.2% approved the union strategy. This outcome was no surprise, as Ms. Rolland had courted her coalition partners in recent months. She showed increased caution on the Nantes-Atlantique airport redevelopment, mentioning for the first time the 'regulation of traffic' for the health of nearby residents, aligning with Green positions. As the PS's number two, she also condemned the government's plan to build an administrative detention center in Nantes.
'The Greens' vote is a very strong choice,' hailed Nantes's mayor. Alongside Marie Vitoux, deputy and lead Green figure, she announced the expansion of free public transport through extended solidarity pricing. 'Today, 30,000 people benefit from this free measure. Tomorrow, it will be 15,000 additional users,' she stated. The initiative is costed at 700,000 euros annually.
Meanwhile, La France Insoumise promises a breakaway program by targeting the Greens, while the center-right union struggles.
