New slum rehabilitation policy for Delhi ready, says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday that the Delhi Slum and JJ Cluster Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2026, has been finalised. He directed officials to notify the policy quickly and begin issuing tenders for rehabilitation projects.

The new policy replaces the 2015 version and sets the eligibility cut-off date for residents at January 1, 2025. It is expected to benefit around four lakh families living in Delhi’s jhuggi-jhopri clusters.

Shah chaired a review meeting attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal. He asked the Delhi Development Authority and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to issue tenders for five clusters within 45 days.

Officials were also directed to prepare tenders for 50 additional clusters and to float at least five public-private partnership projects every month. Rehabilitation colonies must include anganwadi centres, schools, health centres, and playgrounds.

Shah said the Centre remains committed to the welfare of the poor under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
