Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has filed a dispute with the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal challenging the appointment of Fred Matiang’i as Jubilee Party Deputy Party Leader. The case questions whether the party followed its constitution in making recent leadership changes.
Ngunjiri filed the petition on May 28 against the Jubilee Party and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties. He argues that members were not given documents showing approval for the changes and that no National Delegates Conference was held to register Matiang’i in the role.
The former MP stated the case is not intended to block Matiang’i from seeking the presidency. “This case is not about whether Dr Fred Matiang’i should or should not seek the Presidency. Every qualified Jubilee member has a right to seek elective office,” he said.
Ngunjiri also raised concerns about the party’s decision not to field a candidate in the Mbeere North by-election. He said the Jubilee Party belongs to ordinary members and called for greater transparency in its governance.
The matter is expected to come before the tribunal for directions in the coming days.
