North Chennai's M.C. Road set for pedestrian-friendly makeover

The Greater Chennai Corporation has begun work on a pedestrian plaza along M.C. Road in North Chennai. The project, estimated at more than ₹24 crore, includes cobbled walkways and an underground storm-water drain network.

Work is under way to lay cobblestones and build the drainage system on the road in the Royapuram zone. Delhi-based OASIS Designs is the lead consultant, with Chennai-based Madras Hives as the local partner.

Ronald Deepak R. of Madras Hives said the plaza will have cobbled walkways, customised seating and shaded areas. Only autorickshaws and two-wheelers will be allowed on a narrower carriageway, while other vehicles will be restricted. Parking will be provided about 100 metres away.

Sujata Chatterjee of OASIS Designs said all underground utilities were laid before surface paving. She added that adjoining green spaces will be linked to act as water retention areas during heavy rain.

GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran recently inspected the site and directed officials to expedite the work.
