The National Police Service (NPS) has dismissed media reports claiming Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin's tenure ends today, April 1. NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga called the reports inaccurate, premature and misleading. Amin continues to serve lawfully, Nyaga said.
Mohammed Amin's tenure as DCI Director began on October 14, 2022, after George Kinoti resigned. It received a two-year extension in July 2024 despite reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. Media reports, including from Daily Nation, claimed it ends today, but NPS has refuted this.
NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated, “The claim that Mr Amin's tenure 'ends today' is factually inaccurate, premature, speculative, and misleading.” He added that no newspaper can declare a public officer's tenure ended. NPS criticised Daily Nation's headline “Tenure Ends for DCI Boss Haunted by Abductions” as reckless.
Under Amin, DCI implemented reforms, modernised forensic systems and expanded ties with Interpol and FBI. Amin was elected Africa's delegate to the Interpol Executive Committee in 2025. Yet it faced criticism over unresolved cases like the Kericho mass grave and Gen Z protests.
Deputy DCI Director John Onyango is seen as a likely successor. President William Ruto will appoint the next director based on National Police Service Commission recommendations.
