Oscars 2026 expands broadcast to include casting award

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, set for March 15, 2026, will feature all 24 awards live on broadcast, including a new category recognizing achievement in casting. This marks the first new Oscars category since best animated feature in 2001. Conan O'Brien returns as host for the event on ABC.

Event Overview

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 2026 Oscars will present every one of its 24 awards during the live telecast, with the addition of a casting achievement prize. This expansion highlights the Academy's efforts to honor diverse contributions to filmmaking, from major categories like best picture and best actor to behind-the-scenes roles.

New Casting Category Details

The casting award, first announced by the Academy in 2025, will debut at the 98th Oscars. Members of the casting directors branch will shortlist 10 films for consideration, following a process similar to categories such as documentary, international feature, makeup and hairstyling, score, song, sound, visual effects, and short films. Shortlists are scheduled for reveal on December 16, 2025, with final nominees announced on January 22, 2026.

This new recognition comes ahead of another planned addition: a stunt design award set for the 100th Oscars in 2028. The Academy stated that including the casting prize underscores the vital role casting plays in shaping on-screen performances and storytelling.

Broadcast and Hosting

The ceremony airs live on ABC starting at 7 p.m. ET on March 15, 2026. Comedian Conan O'Brien is confirmed to host again, bringing his signature blend of humor to the evening. Major awards like best picture, best actor, and best actress will remain prominently featured alongside the expanded lineup.
