Osun police arrest man for defiling 12-year-old girl

The Osun State Police Command has detained a 50-year-old man in Ilesa for the alleged defilement of a 12-year-old girl. The arrest followed a report from the victim's mother, who noticed suspicious evidence on her daughter's clothing. Investigations revealed repeated assaults starting from July 2025.

In Ilesa, within the Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun State, police acted swiftly on a complaint lodged on November 16, 2025, at the 'C' Divisional Headquarters. The report came from the mother of a 12-year-old girl, who found a whitish slimy substance on her daughter's underwear during laundry. When questioned, the girl disclosed that her neighbor, the 50-year-old suspect, had engaged in sexual intercourse with her.

Authorities immediately arranged for the victim to undergo a medical examination at an approved facility, where findings confirmed sexual assault involving forceful penetration. The case was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department's family and gender unit for deeper probe. The girl was also moved to a succour centre for ongoing care, where she was found to be malnourished due to her family's circumstances.

Further inquiries uncovered that this was not an isolated incident; the assaults had begun in July 2025. The suspect, taking advantage of the victim's widowed mother who lacked a steady income, reportedly paid the girl N200 after each encounter to purchase food.

DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, detailed these developments in a statement released on December 5, 2025. "The Police Command in Osun State wishes to inform the general public that following a complaint on 16th November, 2025, a case of defilement was reported... Upon questioning, the victim opened up that the suspect, who is their neighbour, had carnal knowledge of her," the statement noted.

State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan strongly denounced the crime, stating it represents a grave form of child abuse, molestation, and exploitation. He called on parents and guardians to remain alert and report any suspicions to police or relevant agencies, emphasizing, "Together, we can protect our children and uphold justice." This incident underscores ongoing challenges in safeguarding vulnerable children in the community.
