Possible further poisoning case in Istanbul after family death

The death of a Hamburg family in Istanbul from suspected pesticide poisoning raises concerns. Reports point to at least one more case involving a child's death. The same pest control company was involved.

In November, four members of a family from Hamburg died during their vacation in Istanbul. Initially, food poisoning was suspected, but a preliminary forensic report points to pest control measures in the room below. This is not yet confirmed, and food poisoning is now considered less likely.

Reports now suggest further incidents. In April, a three-year-old boy in Istanbul succumbed to pesticide poisoning, as reported by the DHA news agency. The child vomited repeatedly at home, was taken to the hospital, and died there. The autopsy confirmed poisoning by pesticides used in pest control in the neighboring apartment. The father filed a complaint against the company, and the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office has initiated investigations. It is the same firm that operated in the Hamburg family's hotel.

Additionally, the death of a German exchange student was reported in November 2024. Originally classified as food poisoning, there are now indications that pesticides against bedbugs were the cause.

The burial of the Hamburg family drew widespread sympathy. Relatives accused the doctors of wasting precious time. The cases highlight safety issues in pest control practices in Istanbul accommodations.
