Rahm Emanuel says Democrats have lost the plot on key issues

Former Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel criticized the Democratic Party for prioritizing cultural issues over everyday concerns like education. Speaking on the 'Fifth Column' podcast, he argued that positions on topics such as trans athletes and defunding the police have alienated voters. Emanuel highlighted poor reading and math scores among American children as evidence of misplaced focus.

Rahm Emanuel, who served as White House chief of staff to Barack Obama and mayor of Chicago, told the 'Fifth Column' podcast hosted by Kmele Foster, Michael Moynihan, and Matt Welch that Democrats have 'lost the plot.' He pointed to issues like 'Latinx,' defunding the police, claims that police organizations are racist, and cultural debates in schools as examples where the party is on the 'losing side.' 'We as Democrats nationally... are on the losing side of those cultural wars. Full stop,' Emanuel said on the April 2 episode, as shared in a tweet by Jake Can72 the same day. Emanuel questioned the emphasis on bathroom and locker room access amid educational failures. 'You are worried about bathroom access and locker room access. Why don’t you focus on classroom excellence? You have 50% of our kids not reading at grade level,' he stated. He noted reading and math scores are at a 30-year low, and Democrats have not addressed it effectively. One host suggested tackling both cultural fights and issues like education, the economy, and health care simultaneously. Emanuel countered, 'You’ve proven you can’t, because you’ve permitted a 30-year low in reading and math scores, and nobody seems to be calling the whistle on this.' He attributed the shift to the party becoming 'unanchored' from values resonating with everyday Americans. Emanuel also decried the party's stance on trans-identifying men in women's sports as undermining Title IX, a law Democrats championed. 'Why would you undercut the premise of Title IX...? To me, it’s insane!' he exclaimed.

Rahm Emanuel is pitching a proposal to steer some departing U.S. service members into registered apprenticeships in the skilled trades, including a cash bonus for participants, as he continues a series of policy rollouts that have fueled speculation about his political ambitions.

President Donald Trump told House Republicans he was offering a “road map” for holding their congressional majorities in this year’s midterm elections, but he spent much of his remarks on cultural issues and grievances, offering few specifics on voters’ top economic concerns even as polling has shown his approval rating under 50%.

Civil rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill argues that Democrats are reluctant to confront racism as a driving force behind Donald Trump’s political appeal, warning that this reluctance could delay urgently needed action. In a recent podcast discussion, she cautions that misplaced institutional trust and a tendency to normalize crisis hinder recognition of unraveling democratic norms, and she calls for a renewed commitment to the ideals embodied in the 14th Amendment.

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump has intersected with a growing Republican effort to cast him as emblematic of the Democratic Party’s left wing. That campaign has intensified with Mamdani’s decision to add sociology professor Alex Vitale, a prominent critic of policing, to his transition team, and with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent questioning the viability of the mayor-elect’s policy agenda in a televised interview.

With the 2026 midterm elections looming, Democrats across the ideological spectrum are rallying around an “affordability” message aimed at addressing voters’ cost-of-living worries. Some party strategists and liberal critics argue the framing helps unify Democrats but is unlikely to satisfy voters’ broader anger about inequality without sharper, more explicitly populist policies.

Democrats Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey won their gubernatorial races despite Republican messaging targeting transgender rights, underscoring signs that such attacks are not decisive with voters.

Zohran Mamdani's victory as New York City mayor-elect has inspired millennial and Gen Z Democrats to use social media algorithms in their races. His digital strategy mobilized young voters and raised significant funds from outside the city. This approach is spreading to candidates in states like Arizona, Idaho and Georgia.
