The US Senate passed a resolution declaring that FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried should under no circumstances receive a presidential pardon or commutation.
The nonbinding measure passed by unanimous consent on Wednesday after Bankman-Fried sought clemency. Senators Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming and Ruben Gallego of Arizona led the bipartisan effort.
"He had his day in court," Lummis said when introducing the resolution on June 17. Gallego added, "Keep him locked up."
Bankman-Fried was convicted in November 2023 on seven counts tied to the collapse of FTX, which prosecutors described as one of the largest financial frauds in US history. American customers lost more than $8 billion. He is not eligible for release until around 2044.
President Donald Trump has said he has no plans to pardon Bankman-Fried, though he has granted clemency to other crypto figures including Changpeng Zhao and Ross Ulbricht.
