Some SMAN 72 students seek transfer due to explosion trauma

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung was surprised to learn that some SMAN 72 students want to transfer schools due to trauma from the bomb explosion on November 7, 2025. The school is delaying in-person classes and continuing distance learning on November 17. Police revealed three other bombs failed to detonate because the perpetrator was injured first.

The pipe bomb explosion at SMAN 72 in Jakarta's Kelapa Gading on Friday, November 7, 2025, injured 96 people. According to police data as of Thursday, November 13, 2025, 20 individuals remain hospitalized. The perpetrator, identified as F, brought seven active pipe bombs, but only four detonated at two locations: the school mosque and the waste bank and reading garden area.

According to Commander of Brimob Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Major General Henik Maryanto, in a press conference on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the explosion at the school mosque left two blast craters, plastic shards, nails, bag fragments, and electronic components like a rocker switch. "The TKP at the school mosque found two remnants of homemade bomb explosions along with various evidence such as plastic shards, two craters or blast holes we found, nails, bag pieces, and electronic components like a rocker switch," Henik stated. The bomb was suspected to be remotely controlled using a remote, supported by CCTV footage showing the perpetrator carrying a similar device. At the second site, one bomb was found in a soda can packaging with a burning fuse.

The three other bombs failed to explode because perpetrator F was injured first during the action, according to Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Major General Budi Hermanto, on Monday, November 17, 2025. "Yes, that's right, (the perpetrator was injured first)," he said. Those bombs have been dismantled by the bomb disposal team and are now evidence at the National Police Forensic Laboratory Center.

Post-incident, SMAN 72 Principal Tetty Helena Tampubolon stated the school would continue distance learning (PJJ) on Monday, November 17, 2025, while seeking parental approval for hybrid mode. "Monday is definitely still PJJ. We have to make sure with the parents whether hybrid is okay yet," she said on Saturday, November 15, 2025. She acknowledged many students miss school, but some remain traumatized and require psychological support. "We can't yet ensure they all have to learn in person, because if they're not all (okay) yet, there are still some whose condition, their trauma is still there," Tetty said.

Governor Pramono Anung, who received a report from the principal on Sunday, November 16, 2025, was surprised by the transfer requests from traumatized students. "What surprised me, the Principal also conveyed that there are some students who are traumatized. Because of the trauma, they want to transfer schools. Yes, but this becomes its own issue," Pramono said. He advised the school not to force reopening if students are not ready. "The principle is, I told the Principal, if Monday is ready, go ahead and open, but if not ready, don't force it," he added. Psychological counseling continues, though results are not yet detailed.
