Tennis Canada plans IGA Stadium overhaul with retractable roof

Tennis Canada has announced plans to modernize the IGA Stadium in Montreal ahead of future Canadian Open events. The project aims to add a retractable roof and increase seating capacity to 15,000. Officials say the upgrades will help the tournament compete with other Masters 1000 events.

Valerie Tetreault stated that modernizing the facilities at IGA Stadium has become imperative to preserve the unique model that Tennis Canada has built over several decades. The current venue holds 11,991 spectators and lacks a roof, which has created issues during rain.

The new stadium will be constructed at Jarry Park with no additional location costs and will operate year-round. It is expected to match the standards of the Sobey Stadium in Toronto, which already features modern amenities.

The Canadian Open would become the fourth 1000-level event with a retractable roof, following Hard Rock Stadium for the Miami Open, La Caja Magica for the Madrid Open, and the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena for the Shanghai Masters. Last year's event saw withdrawals from Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic due to injuries.
