Tibidabo marks 125 years since creation of its corporation

Barcelona’s Tibidabo amusement park marks 125 years since the founding of Sociedad Anónima El Tibidabo on February 20, 1899.

The company brought together prominent figures of the era including Salvador Andreu, Rómulo Bosch y Alsina, Romano Macayá, Francisco Simón and Teodoro Roviralta. Its initial aim was to develop the mountain then known as la Montaña Pelada and turn it into a leisure area with a tramway, a funicular and a recreational center.

Works started in 1900. In 1901 the main avenue, the tram and the funicular were inaugurated, the first of its kind in Spain. These infrastructures enabled mass access to the summit of the Serra de Collserola.

Throughout the 20th century attractions were added such as the Carrusel Eléctrico in 1910 and the Ferrocarril Aéreo in 1915. After the postwar period facilities were modernized and symbols like Doña Atalaya and Don Avión emerged. The recent addition of the Cuca de Llum maintains the original purpose of bringing Tibidabo closer to Barcelona.
