In a statement, Walworth described What's Up as their New York record. They explained that it explores dedication to self-expression and subculture in one of the most hostile environments on Earth. Walworth performed drums, bass, and guitar on the album.

Additional contributors include Hannah Pruzinsky, Jonnie Baker, Ceci Sturman, Helen Ballentine of Skullcrusher, Emily Sprague, Mari Rubio, and Elijah Wolf. Told Slant has scheduled three United Kingdom shows for November to support the release.
