UI suspends academic status of 16 FH students in ongoing sexual harassment case

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has temporarily deactivated the academic status of 16 Fakultas Hukum (FH) students suspected in a verbal sexual harassment case stemming from a group chat that went viral on social media last week. The measure, effective from April 15 to May 30, 2026, follows recommendations from UI's Satgas PPK and aims to ensure an objective investigation while protecting all involved parties.

Universitas Indonesia received a Surat Memo Internal Rencana Tindak Lanjut Pemeriksaan from its Satuan Tugas Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan (Satgas PPK) on April 15, 2026, regarding the sexual harassment case at Fakultas Hukum involving 16 students alleged to have made degrading comments about female students and lecturers in a Line group chat.

UI promptly followed up by deactivating their academic status until May 30, 2026. Direktur Hubungan Masyarakat, Media, Pemerintah, dan Internasional UI Erwin Agustian Panigoro stated, “This step is taken as part of the university's commitment to ensure the examination process runs objectively, protects all involved parties, and maintains a conducive academic environment.”

During the suspension, the students are prohibited from academic activities such as classes and advising, have restricted campus access (except for examinations), and are barred from student organization involvement to avoid contact with victims or witnesses.

Erwin Agustian Panigoro emphasized that this is a preventive administrative measure to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
