Vattenfall selects Rolls-Royce for new reactors at Ringhals

Vattenfall has chosen Rolls-Royce as supplier for three new small modular reactors at Ringhals. The announcement came at a press conference on Monday, June 15.

The supplier selection process has been ongoing for four years. The decision was taken by project company Videberg Kraft, owned by the state, Vattenfall and Industrikraft.

The contract covers three reactors with an output of 470 megawatts each. They will be built on the Värö peninsula and the first is planned to enter operation in the mid-2030s. It will be the first time in over 40 years that new nuclear power is built in Sweden.

Energy and Business Minister Ebba Busch (KD) called the decision a major step for the Swedish nuclear power program. Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) described it as a milestone and stressed that the construction will create jobs and strengthen the economy.

Negotiations are now underway on agreements with Videberg Kraft and an application for state aid to the EU Commission.
