Yankees sign veteran shortstop Paul DeJong to minor-league deal

The New York Yankees have added depth at shortstop by signing nine-year veteran Paul DeJong to a minor-league contract, according to a report. This move comes as Anthony Volpe recovers from shoulder surgery. DeJong, a former All-Star, brings versatility and power potential to the infield.

The New York Yankees are bolstering their shortstop position amid injuries and limited options. With Anthony Volpe sidelined due to shoulder surgery, José Caballero is expected to start at the position initially. The team also re-signed Amed Rosario, who has only played 15 games at shortstop over the last two seasons combined.

On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees agreed to a minor-league deal with Paul DeJong. The 31-year-old infielder is a nine-year major league veteran and a 2019 All-Star during his time with the St. Louis Cardinals. Since leaving the Cardinals in 2023, DeJong has suited up for five teams: the Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Washington Nationals.

In 57 games last season with the Nationals, DeJong hit .228 with an 81 OPS+ and a minus-0.1 bWAR. However, he showed power upside, including a 24-homer season split between the White Sox and Royals, and a 30-homer year earlier in St. Louis. DeJong's ability to play second and third base, in addition to shortstop, could allow him to carve out a platoon role once Volpe returns.

This signing provides experienced depth without a major financial commitment, though it may not excite fans awaiting larger free-agent acquisitions. DeJong's occasional power streaks could prove valuable if he earns a spot on the opening day roster.

The New York Mets have agreed to a two-year contract with infielder Jorge Polanco, formerly of the Seattle Mariners. Polanco's signing highlights his remarkable reduction in strikeout rate from 29.2% in 2024 to 15.6% in 2025, the largest single-season drop in MLB history. This improvement, driven by health recovery and swing adjustments, positions him as a contact-oriented power hitter for the Mets.
