The president of Morena's National Elections Commission, Citlalli Hernández, and Luis Felipe Calderón engaged in a dispute on the social network X over President Claudia Sheinbaum's decision to attend the 2026 World Cup final.
Luis Felipe Calderón criticized Sheinbaum for attending the World Cup closing ceremony but not the opening. He stated that “se le hizo fifí ir a la inauguración del Mundial” and added that “no vayan a pensar que en México no fue a ninguno por temor a la rechifla”.
Citlalli Hernández replied that the president attends “como Jefa de Estado y como coanfitriona del Mundial”. She also said “tu padre es el ser menos querido en México, quizás por eso su abuso de alcohol” and accused him of having “ensangrentado a nuestro país” and “pactar con un cártel”.
In response, Luis Felipe Calderón defended his father and noted that Sheinbaum is “la primera jefa de Estado que no asiste a la inauguración del Mundial en su país desde 1938”. He mentioned the ovation Felipe Calderón received at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and questioned the alcoholism claims.
Claudia Sheinbaum explained in a video that her presence at the final is for diplomatic reasons alongside the leaders of the United States and Canada. She highlighted coordination among the three host countries of the tournament.
