President Claudia Sheinbaum travels to the United States to attend the FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain in New York. She accepted a personal invitation from President Donald Trump and will meet him along with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Sheinbaum notified Congress that she would leave Mexico on Saturday, July 18, and return on Monday, July 20. The Interior Ministry sent the document to the Permanent Commission, citing Article 88 of the Constitution.
The president explained that she considered the presence of the three leaders of the host countries important for diplomatic reasons. “I decided to attend because it is a direct invitation from the president of the United States,” she stated during her tour of Quintana Roo.
Sheinbaum’s flight from Cancún faced a three-hour delay due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, although FIFA kept the match scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 13:00 Central Mexico Time. The US ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, welcomed the visit and highlighted coordination among the countries.
