President Claudia Sheinbaum explained during her July 20 conference how Donald Trump personally invited her to the 2026 World Cup final in New York, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0.
Sheinbaum detailed that Trump asked her by phone on Friday: “Claudia, are you coming?”. She replied that she would attend if he invited her and Trump confirmed the invitation.
The president attended the awards ceremony and presented the Ballon d'Or to Spain's Rodri Hernández. She denied any disrespect from the Argentine players and attributed their behavior to concentration after finishing second.
Sheinbaum also noted that Trump, Mark Carney and the King of Spain praised the Mexican team's performance. She traveled on a SEDENA plane after bad weather canceled her commercial flight from Cancun.
