Zahara Mohamed, a resident of Lamu County, began growing vegetables in old tires in 2024 and now earns between Sh15,000 and Sh20,000 each month.
Ms Mohamed, 45, from Kauthara village, had no paid work several years ago. She learned the tire method through TikTok and YouTube videos.
She grows spinach, kale and other vegetables without chemicals, using compost and animal manure instead.
County agriculture officer Lenox Katana said the approach is simple and suitable for urban areas. Ms Mohamed supplies her produce to the Hindi market and local hotels.
