The Best Cities for Remote Work 2025 report, produced by Best City Index, evaluated global cities for digital nomads based on factors like internet stability, cost of living, coworking spaces, and urban conditions, avoiding subjective perceptions.
Portugal stands out with Lisbon, which blends solid connectivity, affordable costs compared to other European capitals, and a regulatory framework welcoming foreign workers. Australia contributes Melbourne, praised for quality public services, stable tech infrastructure, and good urban planning, despite higher living expenses.
Thailand's Chiang Mai excels with low living costs, reliable connectivity, and an established remote worker community. The United States features Austin, Texas, due to its tech ecosystem and digital job opportunities, though housing is pricey.
Dubai in the United Arab Emirates impresses with fast internet, plentiful coworking options, and appeal to international talent. Japan enters via Tokyo, emphasizing tech reliability and safety, offsetting high costs. Spain's Barcelona provides strong digital connectivity, flexible workspaces, and high quality of life, but grapples with housing market pressures.
The report stresses that remote work success hinges on integrated digital infrastructure, economics, and urbanism. "This modality can mobilize the economy and develop certain sectors, especially leisure", noted Juliana Morad, director of the labor observatory at Universidad Javeriana.
