Eighteen-year-old Arvid Lindblad is set to become Britain's youngest Formula 1 driver with his debut for Racing Bulls at the season-opening race in Australia. The young talent, who has progressed rapidly through junior categories, is preparing in Bahrain ahead of the event in early March. Team principal Alan Permane has praised Lindblad's speed and inquisitive approach.
Arvid Lindblad, born and raised in Virginia Water, Surrey, traces his passion for Formula 1 back to age four. He recalls sitting with his father watching a race on television and asking, “Isn't it possible to be there?” This moment ignited his journey, leading to seven years in karting where he won international championships.
Lindblad made his car-racing debut in 2022 at just 15 years old. Fast-tracked by Red Bull's Dr. Helmut Marko, he advanced through Formula 4, Formula 3, and Formula 2 year by year. Now, at 18, he joins Racing Bulls as one of five British drivers on the 2026 grid.
Preparations are underway in Bahrain, where Lindblad and the team are completing pre-season testing after an initial shakedown in Spain. He acknowledges the challenge: “Yeah, I think so. Obviously, it’s a big step from F2, especially this year. There are regulation changes, and everything is very different.” Lindblad highlights the benefit of three test sessions this year, up from the usual one, and his simulator work to adapt quickly. He is eager to race in Melbourne, stating, “Since becoming a Formula 1 driver... the best thing was just becoming a Formula 1 driver.”
Racing Bulls principal Alan Permane, who has worked with drivers like Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, commends Lindblad's qualities. “What do you look for? What do you need in a young driver? Of course, the first thing you need is for them to be quick.” Permane adds that Lindblad is inquisitive, asks many questions, and delivers strong debriefs, fostering good team communication.
Lindblad feels no undue pressure, saying, “I wouldn’t really say pressure... this is what I’ve worked towards my whole life.” His focus is on understanding the car and maximizing performance from the start.
