Amin questions support for Flávio Bolsonaro after PL sidelines him

Senator Esperidião Amin (PP) has cast doubt on his support for Flávio Bolsonaro's (PL-RJ) presidential candidacy after being excluded from Santa Catarina's Senate ticket by the PL. Governor Jorginho Mello chose Carlos Bolsonaro and Caroline de Toni for the Senate seats. Amin intends to proceed as a pre-candidate backed by his party.

Senator Esperidião Amin (PP), sidelined by the Liberal Party (PL) in forming Santa Catarina's Senate ticket, has expressed doubts about backing Flávio Bolsonaro's (PL-RJ) presidential pre-candidacy. In a statement to Folha's Painel column, Amin said: "Flávio has been my candidate since December, but now I don't know if it will be legally viable. I would like it to be, but we have legislation to follow".

Governor Jorginho Mello (PL), seeking reelection, selected former councilor Carlos Bolsonaro and federal deputy Caroline de Toni, both from the PL, for the two Senate seats. This decision was approved by the PL leadership and former President Jair Bolsonaro. Consequently, Santa Catarina's PP, which had planned to support Mello, may remain neutral or align with Chapecó's mayor, João Rodrigues (PSD), a Bolsonaro ally. The PSD is considering fielding another presidential candidate, likely Paraná Governor Ratinho Jr.

Amin remarked on the governor's early move: "The governor advanced the electoral process and made a choice. We will make ours at the appropriate time", he stated. He emphasized that the PL should explain its stance and that he aims to run for Senate reelection with PP and federation support: "I am a pre-candidate for senator, with my party's and federation's backing. The PL is entitled to its positions. We will take the position that suits us".

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) announced on Friday (5) that he was chosen by his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, as the presidential candidate in 2026. The decision strengthens the family's influence in the Bolsonarista camp and draws reactions from the PT, which sees benefits for Lula. On Saturday (6), Argentine President Javier Milei expressed support for the pre-candidacy.

A Genial/Quaest poll released on Sunday shows that 49% of voters believe Senator Flávio Bolsonaro will take his pre-candidacy for the presidency to the end. Belief is higher among Bolsonaro supporters, while Lula voters see the announcement as a negotiation tactic. The move comes amid family maneuvers that centrão politicians interpret as signs of potential withdrawals.

Since his transfer to Papudinha on January 15, former President Jair Bolsonaro has received 27 visit requests, 17 from politicians running in the 2026 elections. Several allies, including senators and deputies, seek Bolsonaro's endorsement for candidacies to state governorships and the Senate in various states. The visits aim to unlock regional electoral agreements.

State deputy Paulo Correa Jr., PSD leader in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp), is in advanced talks to join the PL, dissatisfied with new affiliations to his party on the São Paulo coast. The negotiation takes place amid the dispute between PL and PSD for the vice-governor position in Tarcísio de Freitas' government. Alesp president André do Prado (PL) is leading the discussions with enthusiasm.

Discontent with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, PP leaders are considering launching former Governor Rodrigo Garcia as their own candidate for São Paulo's governorship in 2026. The party prioritizes electing Guilherme Derrite to the Senate but sees potential in Garcia to mobilize support. The move reflects complaints from mayors and lawmakers about the current government's lack of attention.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), a declared presidential candidate for 2026, posted a video on Saturday (17) urging unity among right-wing leaders following recent public spats. He praised former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro and São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, along with other allied governors. Flávio emphasized the need for a shared focus against the Lula government, without internal attacks.
