PL negotiates affiliation of PSD leader in São Paulo assembly

State deputy Paulo Correa Jr., PSD leader in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp), is in advanced talks to join the PL, dissatisfied with new affiliations to his party on the São Paulo coast. The negotiation takes place amid the dispute between PL and PSD for the vice-governor position in Tarcísio de Freitas' government. Alesp president André do Prado (PL) is leading the discussions with enthusiasm.

Paulo Correa Jr., current PSD leader in the Alesp, expressed discomfort with the party's recent affiliations, particularly on the São Paulo coast. "My region is congested with party candidates," the deputy said. He is in advanced negotiations with the PL but has also been approached by Podemos, PP, and Republicanos.

Alesp president André do Prado (PL) is leading the talks and sees the potential affiliation as a gain for the party. "Paulo became uncomfortable [in the PSD] and is a candidate who will have more than 100,000 votes, which can help strengthen the PL bench even more," Prado stated. The switch could happen in March, during the party window period.

In addition to Correa Jr., the PL is close to finalizing the affiliation of Oseias de Madureira, also from the PSD. These movements occur in the context of a dispute between the PSD, led by Gilberto Kassab, and the PL, headed by Valdemar Costa Neto, for the vice-governor position in Governor Tarcísio de Freitas' (Republicanos) administration. The position is currently held by Felício Ramuth (PSD). Kassab intends to launch his own candidate in this year's election, while the PL claims the spot for Prado, after offering it to the PSD in 2022 to support Tarcísio's campaign.

PL president Valdemar Costa Neto stated at a dinner with entrepreneurs in Faria Lima, São Paulo, on the night of February 23, 2026, that there is no room for a third way in the 2026 presidential elections, predicting a second round between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro. Alongside União Brasil president Antônio Rueda, he advocated uniting the right in the first round and criticized 2022 campaign errors. The leaders also promised to block a labor bill in Congress.

Discontent with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, PP leaders are considering launching former Governor Rodrigo Garcia as their own candidate for São Paulo's governorship in 2026. The party prioritizes electing Guilherme Derrite to the Senate but sees potential in Garcia to mobilize support. The move reflects complaints from mayors and lawmakers about the current government's lack of attention.

A rally against President Lula and STF ministers took place on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo on Sunday (March 1, 2026), organized by Deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG). The event, attended by Flávio Bolsonaro and other opposition leaders, drew an estimated 20,000 participants and was dismissed by government allies as a failure. Inflammatory speeches targeted Alexandre de Moraes and Dias Toffoli amid electoral tensions.

The absence of Chamber President Hugo Motta and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre from the Income Tax exemption sanction event on November 26 signals an escalating crisis between Congress and Lula's government. This tension threatens key agendas like the 2026 Budget and Jorge Messias's STF nomination. Jair Bolsonaro's imprisonment takes a backseat, with mild reactions from the right.
