Alexander Zverev defeated Arthur Fery 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the Wimbledon semifinals on July 10 to reach his first final at the tournament. The World No. 3 praised the crowd and the 23-year-old Briton after the match.
Zverev completed the victory in two hours and 14 minutes after Fery's run as a wildcard ended in the last four. The German broke early in the first set but needed a tiebreak, which he won 7-0, to take the lead.
He then secured a double break in the second set and added another in the third to finish the match. Fery had earlier beaten Zizou Bergs, Grigor Dimitrov and Flavio Cobolli to reach the semifinals.
In his post-match comments Zverev said the atmosphere remained excellent despite the pro-Fery crowd. "Yes, I know that 99.99% of this stadium was wanting Arthur (Fery) to win, but it was still such an incredible atmosphere," he said.
Zverev also predicted a long career for Fery and noted he had become only the third German after Boris Becker and Michael Stich to reach the Wimbledon final. He will face either Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
