Spain's National Court has provisionally suspended the declaration of the Madrid regional government's Puerta del Sol headquarters as a Democratic Memory Site. Isabel Díaz Ayuso welcomed the ruling that halts the central government's plan.
The National Court has upheld the Madrid regional government's appeal and ordered the provisional suspension of the agreement by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory. The judges found that the measure could harm the building's institutional image and interfere with its activities.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the ruling as “great news” and said “justice has denied the government one of its new sectarian efforts”. The president added that constantly resorting to memory laws “is sectarian, false and typical of populist governments”.
The Ministry announced it will appeal the decision. Meanwhile, Más Madrid criticised the suspension, stating that what harms institutional image is “erasing the past”. The case remains pending a positive conflict of competences before the Constitutional Court.
