Cade Cavalli and Miles Mikolas have appealed their suspensions stemming from Tuesday’s benches-clearing incident in Boston. Cavalli received an initial seven-game ban while Mikolas was suspended for five games. Both players remain scheduled for upcoming starts as the appeals process moves forward.
Washington Nationals pitchers Cade Cavalli and Miles Mikolas appealed their suspensions on Wednesday following the incident at Fenway Park. Cavalli was penalized seven games for initiating and participating in the on-field altercation while Mikolas drew a five-game suspension for his actions after the benches cleared.
Cavalli expressed remorse on Wednesday morning at Fenway Park and reiterated his stance on Friday at Nationals Park. “It’s been a tough couple of days,” he said. “It’s been tough to sleep. I never thought in a million years I’d be in this situation.” He added that he has not contacted Boston’s Willson Contreras and hopes the two can move forward respectfully.
Manager Blake Butera stayed noncommittal on pitching plans if either starter is unavailable. Mikolas is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Pirates and Cavalli is lined up to start Monday against the Astros. In-house options such as Brad Lord and Riley Cornelio could be called upon depending on the appeals outcome.
