Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey is tracking for an $80 million to $100 million opening weekend in North America. The Universal film is set to debut in theaters on July 17.
The movie features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal. It has sold out 70 million IMAX screens a year in advance and holds a three-week exclusive run in the large-format format.
Tracking shows strong interest among men over 25, slightly ahead of Nolan's Oppenheimer at a similar stage. Overall first choice numbers surpass those for Oppenheimer and match Project Hail Mary, which opened to $80.5 million.
Nolan's previous top domestic openings include The Dark Knight Rises at $160.9 million and The Dark Knight at $158.4 million. The Odyssey will face international competition from the final games of the World Cup.
