Gilberto Jesús Calao González, sectional director of the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN) in Tuluá, was killed in a sicario attack in the El Jazmín neighborhood of that municipality in Valle del Cauca. The attack happened as he was heading to work in his own vehicle. Authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the motives behind the crime.
The murder of Gilberto Jesús Calao González has caused shock among local authorities and the country's institutional sector. According to the National Police, the attack occurred when the victim was intercepted by two armed men on a motorcycle, who shot him multiple times, causing his death at the scene.
“The National Police informs the public that, regrettably, in recent hours the homicide of Mr. Gilberto Calao González occurred, who served as Sectional Director of the DIAN in Tuluá,” the institution stated in an official communiqué. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area and launched a special operation to apprehend the perpetrators.
The Attorney General's Office has taken over the investigation, examining possible motives without ruling out any hypotheses. Security cameras are being reviewed and witness testimonies collected to progress the case.
The DIAN expressed its deep dismay over the loss of one of its officials. In a statement, the entity described him as “a responsible, committed public servant, loyal to his convictions and respectful.” The crime highlights the vulnerabilities faced by public officials in regions like Valle del Cauca, where violence persists despite security efforts.
