A 50-year-old doctor in Skåne was convicted last year of gross unlawful retention of children after refusing to let his two children return home from Gaza in summer 2023.
The man, who has worked as a doctor at a major hospital in Skåne since 2009, persuaded his wife to travel to Gaza with the children. When she wanted to return home in August he refused and restricted her contact with the children.
The family returned to Sweden on 19 November 2023 after the war broke out. The man was arrested on arrival and the children were handed over to their mother, who has since had sole custody.
The Health and Social Care Inspectorate has reported him to the National Board of Health and Welfare’s disciplinary board and is seeking revocation of his license. The agency argues that the crime damages public trust in the medical profession.
The doctor maintains that the conviction has no connection to his professional work.
