Egypt and the Democratic Republic of the Congo discussed expanding cooperation in water resources management, climate adaptation and capacity building during talks in Cairo.
Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam met the DRC’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Marie Nyangi Ndambi in Cairo. The ministers reviewed an existing bilateral agreement including a rainfall forecasting and climate change centre in the DRC. They also examined progress on solar-powered groundwater stations in Kinshasa Province where 11 of 12 planned stations are complete and operational. A project introducing modern irrigation systems at a model farm in the DRC was also discussed. Sewilam reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to support development projects in the DRC. Both sides stressed the importance of Nile Basin cooperation frameworks and consensus among member states.
