Egypt urges increased climate finance for developing countries at GEF Assembly

Egypt has called for increased financial support for developing countries to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation at the eighth Global Environment Facility assembly in Uzbekistan.

Hoda El-Shawadfy, Assistant Minister for Ecotourism, delivered the statement on behalf of Minister of Environment and Local Development Manal Awad. The statement stressed that global environmental goals cannot be met without adequate, predictable and equitable financing. Egypt highlighted the link between environmental action and sustainable development. It called for simpler funding procedures and insisted that grant-based financing remain the core support mechanism rather than relying on blended finance. Egypt welcomed the Integrated Drylands and Drought Management Programme under the GEF’s ninth replenishment cycle. It also said any future agreement on plastic pollution must be backed by new resources rather than diverted funds.
