The start of the sailing race Gotland Runt was postponed due to a thunderstorm moving toward Sandhamn. The event, originally set for 2 p.m., was moved twice and finally began at 5 p.m.
Race officials made the decision after receiving forecasts of winds up to 25 meters per second. Meteorologist Måns Håkansson described the weather development as highly unpredictable.
Stefan Rahm, club director at KSSS, confirmed the start was postponed following contact with meteorologists. A total of 186 sailboats from 17 countries took part.
It is the second time since 1937 that the Gotland Runt start has been postponed. Last year the race was delayed by almost a full day due to strong winds.
