Gustavo Melella vetoes law halting constitutional reform in Tierra del Fuego

Governor Gustavo Melella signed a decree to veto the law that aimed to halt the provincial constitutional reform. He insists on calling for conventional elections on August 9 despite the Legislature's rejection.

The Tierra del Fuego Legislature had repealed law 1529 by a vote of 11 to 4 weeks earlier. The norm, approved in December 2023, promoted changes to 70 articles of the provincial Constitution.

Melella had called the conventional elections one day before that vote. On Friday he formalized the veto by decree and argued that the process was already underway with the required aggravated majority.

Minister Jorge Canals stated that the legislative decision is unconstitutional because it alters a process linked to constitutional rights. The veto will return to the Legislature, where 10 votes are needed to reject it.

The opposition, led by Mayor Walter Vuoto, criticized the move and accused the governor of ignoring the message from society and parliament in a complex economic context.

Argentina's lower house began debating the glacier law reform on Wednesday, securing quorum with 129 lawmakers from the ruling bloc and allies. The bill, already half-approved by the Senate, lets provinces decide activities on glaciers, drawing sharp criticism from opposition and environmentalists. Protesters gathered outside Congress against the measure.

The Chamber of Deputies' Finance Committee began on Tuesday the detailed discussion of President José Antonio Kast's reconstruction and economic reactivation megareform, amid tensions over more than 1,295 amendments filed by the opposition.

Argentina's Chamber of Deputies approved a reform to the Glaciers Law early Thursday by 137 votes in favor, 111 against, and 3 abstentions. The change allows extractive activities like mining in previously protected areas, sparking backlash from environmentalists and citizens. Over 300,000 people joined a collective unconstitutionality lawsuit, and La Pampa's governor filed a judicial injunction.

The Argentine Senate gave preliminary approval to amendments to the Glaciers Law, ratified the European Union-Mercosur Agreement, and confirmed Fernando Iglesias as ambassador to Belgium and the EU. These approvals, achieved in a tense session on February 26, 2026, mark a victory for Javier Milei's government. The president celebrated the outcome with a social media post.

In a key step for President Claudia Sheinbaum's electoral reform—initially unveiled February 25 and formally presented March 4 as the 'decálogo por la democracia' (see prior coverage)—the Chamber of Deputies' Constitutional Points and Political-Electoral Reform committees approved the proposal on March 10, 2026, by 45-39 votes. It heads to plenary discussion, likely March 11, amid PVEM and PT opposition despite their Morena alliance.

Seventeen state congresses have approved President Claudia Sheinbaum's Plan B electoral reform package, turning it into law after Senate and Chamber of Deputies passage. The measure, needing 17 local legislatures, aims to cap municipal councilors, state legislative budgets, and electoral officials' salaries. Approvals came in Thursday sessions, led by Tabasco.
