Governor Gustavo Melella signed a decree to veto the law that aimed to halt the provincial constitutional reform. He insists on calling for conventional elections on August 9 despite the Legislature's rejection.
The Tierra del Fuego Legislature had repealed law 1529 by a vote of 11 to 4 weeks earlier. The norm, approved in December 2023, promoted changes to 70 articles of the provincial Constitution.
Melella had called the conventional elections one day before that vote. On Friday he formalized the veto by decree and argued that the process was already underway with the required aggravated majority.
Minister Jorge Canals stated that the legislative decision is unconstitutional because it alters a process linked to constitutional rights. The veto will return to the Legislature, where 10 votes are needed to reject it.
The opposition, led by Mayor Walter Vuoto, criticized the move and accused the governor of ignoring the message from society and parliament in a complex economic context.
