The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red rainstorm warning for one hour on Monday night after more than 70mm of rain fell or was expected in the Wan Chai area, while a suspected waterspout was spotted off Cheung Chau.
The red signal was issued at 9.45pm and cancelled at 10.45pm. An amber warning had been issued earlier at 7.05pm.
The Observatory said residents in the vicinity were advised to take necessary precautions to avoid possible flood damage.
The red signal is the middle level in a three-tier system. The forecaster issues a black rainstorm signal when heavy rain exceeding 70mm in an hour has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong and is likely to continue.
