Hong Kong proposes oversight for overnight internet cafes

Authorities in Hong Kong are considering two pathways to regulate internet cafes that offer overnight stays. The move comes as some venues in areas like Mong Kok provide private booths for gamers. Operators currently risk operating without required licences.

In one Mong Kok venue, customers can rent private booths for HK$200 a night. These include a gaming desktop, sofa bed, food options and laundry facilities. An extra HK$9 covers a hot shower while hygiene items cost about HK$28.80.

Registration requires a Hong Kong identity card, Exit-Entry Permit or passport. Hourly rates in other areas range from HK$25.80 to HK$35.80. Such overnight services need a hotel or guest house licence under current rules.

The proposals aim to bring these venues under the Amusement Game Centres Ordinance. Discussions also reference the esports sector and potential growth opportunities.
