Hong Kong unveils life-size Bruce Lee statue for arrival anniversary

An entertainment company and arts curator unveiled a life-size bronze statue of kung fu legend Bruce Lee on Monday to mark the 85th anniversary of his family's arrival in Hong Kong in 1941. The statue is permanently installed at the Prudential Centre on Nathan Road in Jordan, the site of the now-demolished Lee family home. An accompanying exhibition runs until the end of May.

Entertainment company hmvod and curator Heiman Ng unveiled the life-size bronze statue at the former site of the Lee family home. The family returned to Hong Kong in 1941, not long after Bruce Lee's birth, and lived in the now-demolished residential block on Nathan Road in Jordan.

The accompanying “Bruce Lee: Homecoming – 85th Anniversary Exhibition” features previously unseen photographs and rare posters, running until the end of May. The event coincides with mainland China's Labour Day Golden Week holiday from May 1 to 5.

“Apart from the statue on the Avenue of Stars, we have installed this sculpture at his childhood doorstep to reflect his more philosophical ‘be like water’ side,” Ng said. “This is a timely reminder for us to stay calm in the turbulent time of Hong Kong.”

The statue complements the existing one on the Avenue of Stars by emphasising Lee's philosophical side.
