IEBC registers 2.6 million voters in 2027 election preparations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has registered 2,612,725 voters after closing the registration drive on Tuesday. This figure is nearly double the results from 2016 and 2021. Chair Erastus Ethekon said it shows strong national commitment to the democratic process.

The voter registration drive ran through two phases: regular registration from September 29, 2025 to April 2026, and a continuous phase from March 30 to April 28, 2026. Some 267,249 voters were added in regular registration, with 2,345,476 in the continuous phase.

Registration occurred at 30,615 sites, including all 290 constituencies, 1,450 wards, Huduma Centres, higher education institutions, and IEBC's Nairobi customer service centre. The commission deployed 12,520 trained officers and 5,390 KIEMS kits, achieving over 500,000 weekly.

IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon stated, “This exercise demonstrates strong national will to participate in the democratic process and signals high-level preparations for the 2027 General Election.” He credited an improved, inclusive registration model. Nairobi County led with 276,886 new voters, followed by Kiambu and Nakuru.

Challenges persisted in arid areas with infrastructure issues and distances. IEBC now focuses on cleaning and verifying the register for accuracy.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has clarified that not all voters registered before 2012 must re-register. The requirement applies only to those who did not undergo biometric registration since 2012. Chairman Erastus Ethekon stated that pre-2012 data was legally disposed of during electoral reforms.

In the ongoing IEBC 2026 Voter Registration Drive launched March 30, Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has registered 1,876,274 new voters—75% of its 2.5 million target—with four days left until April 28. Chairman Erustus Edung Ethekon urged remaining eligible citizens to register.

Following the March 28 announcement of the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR), Kenya's IEBC has outlined county-specific targets totaling over 5.8 million potential new voters—primarily youth—in its 30-day drive from March 30 to April 28. This builds on the initial 2.5 million registration goal, aligning with the revived 'Niko Kadi' youth campaign. Nairobi leads with 310,486 targets.

The Institute of Election Management Services in Africa says the Electoral Commission’s campaign to register young voters will succeed if two million youth sign up this weekend.
