Eighteen-year-old American Iva Jovic secured her first Wimbledon main-draw victory on opening day with a 7-6(1), 6-0 win over world No. 37 Jaqueline Cristian.
Jovic dominated the match on Court 15, winning the first-set tiebreak 7-1 before reeling off six straight games in the second set. The contest lasted one hour and 30 minutes.
She hit 19 winners compared to Cristian's 12 and converted three of seven break-point opportunities. Jovic also won 10 of 12 net approaches.
Fellow American Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed, praised Jovic after her own second-round win. "She’s a great player, I think she’s so good," Pegula said. "You could just see the look in her face, like, she means business every time she steps out."
