Kaboly predicts Dowdle as Steelers lead back after early camp reps

Longtime Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly said after three training camp practices that Rico Dowdle looks set to be the lead running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Kaboly based his assessment on early rep distribution at camp. He noted Dowdle is likely to handle around 65 to 70 percent of the work rather than a full workload.

The Steelers signed Dowdle to a two-year deal in the offseason after he rushed for more than 1,000 yards with the Carolina Panthers. He previously played for McCarthy in Dallas. Incumbent Jaylen Warren led the team with 952 rushing yards last season.

Reps have been split evenly so far, with Warren taking the first-team snaps during Friday’s walkthrough at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. Pads are scheduled to arrive Monday morning, which could shift the picture.

The Pittsburgh Steelers began their 2026 training camp Wednesday at Saint Vincent College with first-year head coach Mike McCarthy directing a faster-paced practice that featured no live tackling.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren is expected to receive more playing time than newcomer Rico Dowdle at the start of the season, according to beat writer Ray Fittipaldo.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added running back Rico Dowdle this offseason to bolster their backfield after losing Kenneth Gainwell. Former NFL player and broadcaster Mark Schlereth praised the move, ranking it among the top acquisitions league-wide. Schlereth highlighted Dowdle's impact during his time with the Carolina Panthers last season.

Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly forecasts either 12 wins or 5 wins for the team in 2026, ruling out a middling record.

Rico Dowdle has expressed respect for teammate Jaylen Warren as the two running backs compete for carries with the Pittsburgh Steelers during organized team activities.

Mark Kaboly believes the Pittsburgh Steelers' third wide receiver will play a smaller role than expected in the upcoming season. With DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. as the main targets, the position could account for just 25 to 30 percent of snaps.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have intentionally limited Drew Allar's practice reps during the early stages of organized team activities. The approach aims to distribute work among four quarterbacks in the new system under head coach Mike McCarthy.
