Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that Kenyans will soon access their national identity cards digitally through their phones via a new Maisha Card system.
Murkomen made the announcement on Saturday, June 27, during a women empowerment event in Uasin Gishu. He stated that the digital Maisha Card will allow users to store their ID on their phones, complete with a scannable barcode for verification.
The system aims to simplify access to government services and reduce reliance on physical documents. Murkomen noted that even if a physical ID is lost, the digital version on the phone can still confirm a person's identity and details.
No specific rollout date or registration process was provided. The announcement follows the recent launch of online birth certificate downloads through the eCitizen portal.
