Huduma Kenya has stated that citizens cannot cancel a replacement national ID once it has been processed, even if the original card is recovered.
The agency responded directly to a citizen inquiry on Sunday. It confirmed that a replacement cannot be cancelled after processing and that the new card can be collected, resulting in two valid IDs.
The Registration of Persons Act, Cap. 107 prohibits holding more than one active national ID. The law requires that any previously lost card found after a duplicate is issued must be returned immediately to a registration officer.
Huduma Kenya noted that failure to surrender the older card may lead to prosecution under Section 320 of the Penal Code for procuring a document under false pretences. Citizens are advised to visit the nearest Huduma Centre to hand over the extra card.
