KRA clarifies filing of returns without P9 forms

The Kenya Revenue Authority has advised salaried individuals that they can still submit annual tax returns via the iTax portal even without employer-issued P9 forms.

The Kenya Revenue Authority stated on Monday that taxpayers without a P9 form can use the ITR for Employment Income Only option on iTax. "Please note you can use the ITR For Employment Income Only option on iTax if you do not have a P9 form," the authority said in response to a public query.

The clarification addresses concerns as the June 30 filing deadline approaches. Individuals who miss the date face penalties.

The P9 form summarises annual income, PAYE deductions and contributions such as the Housing Levy. KRA noted that personal records can suffice for filing when the document is delayed or unavailable.

The guidance is intended to help employees avoid late penalties when employers are slow to issue the form.
