The New York Mets placed second baseman Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a left hip flexor strain ahead of their series finale against the Cubs at Citi Field.
In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled infielder Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse and right-hander Daniel Duarte. The club had traded left-hander David Peterson to the Cubs.
Manager Carlos Mendoza said Semien had been dealing with the issue for weeks. The pain had persisted over the past 10 days despite treatment.
Semien first felt more pain during his first at-bat in the second inning of Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader. An MRI later confirmed the strain after his mobility issues appeared in the second game.
Brett Baty and the newly recalled Mauricio are expected to handle duties at second base. Semien is batting .214/.271/.341 this season and is considered week to week.
