Minnesota woman charged after blaming dog for fatal crash

Shauna Dokken, 43, has been charged with vehicular homicide in a crash that killed 82-year-old Barbara Lee Welberg on May 29 in Roseau County, Minnesota. Dokken told police her dog caused the crash by twisting the steering wheel.

The crash occurred on Highway 11 when Dokken's red pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Welberg's SUV, which overturned. Deputies arrived at 4 p.m. on May 29 and pronounced Welberg dead at the scene. Dokken suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. Witnesses reported the truck swerving and one driver said it felt as if Dokken was intentionally trying to hit him. State troopers noted Dokken had slurred speech but tested negative for alcohol. She admitted taking prescription medications including Adderall and lorazepam that day, with a blood test still pending. Dokken gave police several conflicting accounts of the incident before blaming her dog. She has a prior DWI conviction from 2025 and was on probation at the time of the crash. She is being held in the Roseau County Jail on $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 10 for a probation violation hearing.
